General information
The main activity is to take lectures not research
and thesis like in Japanese universities. We will do the thesis in the 2nd
semester of 2nd year. The exam is 30 points as full score. You need
to get 60 %, 18 points as a total. You need to get 120 ECTS to graduate for 2
years. Some people do not graduate in 2 years even though they passed all exams
in right moments. In the 1st semester of 1st year, we had
to take 36 to 42 ECTS which is bit more than average, 30 ECTS. Our lives were
quite busy and adapting new lives makes it much busier because I am not from Italy
but from Japan.
Introduction of lectures we had 5 lectures in this semester.
What we did?
Product Development Studio 1 (12 ECTS) 0915-1815 Friday
You may think 9 hours are too long but don’t
worry, we had a lunch break from 1230 to 1400. Also usually the lecture does
not start on time so it becomes shorter. We study design in the before noon and
technical drawings and solid works in the afternoon.
Before noon class
We studied basics of design like difference
between primitive and freeform, integral and additive features, technology,
mode of use, foam. I did not study design at all in my bachelor so they were
totally new knowledge so it was interesting. The lecture is not just to listen
to professors but we have group workings. The group are made from 4 students.
We were recommended to make groups with half engineer and half designer. There
are two. The first was redesigning an electrical pot and the second one was
redesigning trash compactor from Joseph and Joseph.https://www.josephjoseph.com/en-eu/titan-trash-compactor
Redesigning means finding problems and suggest solutions, choosing markets, and reflecting them in our design. The mechanism of compacting was not a main topic but the feature and language was the one. We showed the process to professors every week so we could get feedbacks.

Afternoon class
We studied technical drawings and 3D
modeling with Solid Works. In Europe it is one point perspective drawing so I need
time to change my mind from three point perspective. In solidworks class, we had
lectures for a few weeks. After that we applied those knowledges for the next
project which was the reverse modeling of a sprayer. We disassembled it, measure
all parts and make in solidworks and assembled it. This was also a group
working. The number of people was 4.
How we are evaluated?
Before noon class → quality of group
workings
Afternoon class → quality of group
working and solidworks exam
The solidworks exam was to make parts , assemble
it and draw assembly drawing. This is much more important than group working in
the afternoon because this group working matters only 2.5 points at maximum.
My impression
Studying design was totally new things for
me so it was very interesting. Also it was very good to have discussion with
professors every week. In group working, people are used to discuss and express
their ideas but in Japan, I did not have such training at all so it was hard. I
still need more experience to do as good as them.
Sad story
In group working, I got to be with a guy like
a teacher in the movie WHIPLASH
so it was totally disaster.
